A FATHER-of-four who was caught with an imitation firearm at a working men's club had planned to get armed police to shoot him.
John Shields, 28, had a death wish and had gone into the club at Mytholmroyd for a drink to give himself some "Dutch courage" in order to carry out his morbid plan, Calderdale magistrates heard.
But the starting pistol accidentally went off and shocked staff alerted police.
The court heard Shields had intended to break into a car and create a scene by waving the fake weapon around in the hope that armed response officers would shoot him.
Jane Farrar, prosecuting, said: "He wanted to commit suicide."
Shields, of School Street, Greetland, who admitted possessing an imitation firearm and possessing cannabis, was pointed out by members of staff when police arrived. He had a balaclava, a ski mask, gloves, hats and a crow bar along with the pistol and cannabis in a bag.
He said if the alcohol had not given him the courage to go through with the death wish plot he had intended to eat the cannabis to "numb" himself.
Mrs Farrar said: "The revolver was a blank firing starting pistol."
Larry Parks, for Shields, said his client suffered from bouts of depression.
Shields tested positive for cocaine.
Mrs Farrar said Shields has previous convictions for wounding with intent, burglary, theft, threatening behaviour and possessing a class B drug.
Sentencing was adjourned until July 14 and Shields was remanded in custody.
As reported by the Courier, police were called to the club on Saturday night.
A member of staff reported seeing a man with a gun.
Peter Copley, club steward, said: "The police arrived in no time at all."
A woman who lives nearby said she had heard a commotion and saw a police car parked outside.
"They had someone in handcuffs and were searching his bag," she said.

MattBingo, your comment is out of order. do you realise how much traffic chaos would caused to us innocent law abiding motorists if he decided to jump off North Bridge. Next time, can you please be more considerate and suggest somewhere else for him to jump off, preferebly somewhere that doesn't cause too much inconvenience for everybody else............

ahem, quite right, and thats the problem with this country. FACT - he had a gun and had he had pointed it at anyone whilst the armed police were there then he should have been given ONE warning to put the gun down before being shot. simple as that. OK, it was only a starting pistol and therefore relatively armless, but at a distance there is no way that an object shaped like a gun can be classed as a real firearm or something that is harmless. anyone who disagree's with the above statement should be taken to the next incident where the armed police are involved and then invited to classify if the gun is real or not. if they decide it is not real, then it should be them who goes upto the armed man to take the gun off him. i wonder how many would?

Oh yes and for all those who assummed that the rollout of the tazer would just let trigger happy officers go crazy with their new toy's, so far the comments have been unfounded. Only one tazer dishcarge in Calderdale since it was introduced!!! Not exactly trigger happy.

There ought to be a Council Dept. for those like Mr. Shields who want to see themselves off, so that they can do it with the minimum of inconvevience to drivers. I,m sorry he gets depressed, but his conviction rate depresses the rst of us.

Where's Sabot these days for the alternate view ??
