ONE of two savage dogs that killed family pets across Halifax is believed to have been destroyed.
Police finally caught up with the dogs after they claimed nearly 20 pets – rabbits and guinea pigs – in three months.

All were taken from outdoor hutches and mauled to death.

Police have confirmed two female owners have been arrested and are aw
aiting charge.

The larger dog – a Rhodesian ridgeback- type – is reported to have been put down for public safety.

The second, smaller dog, is being kept indoors.

For families who have lost pets across Wheatley, Pellon, Highroad Well, Norton Tower and Warley, the news is a welcome relief.

Helen Hadfield, who lives in Warley with children Danny, eight, Bethany, 11, and Charlotte, five, said: "It is brilliant news." Their guinea pig Tippy Toes was decapitated after the wire hutch it shared with 17 others was ripped open.

"The attack was horrible," said Helen. "We had to move all the guinea pigs into the computer room in our house afterwards.

"Charlotte was too scared to go upstairs and get her pyjamas by herself because she was scared the dogs would get her.

"It's a real relief to know my children can be in the garden."

Mother-of-two Julie Barker, of Norton Tower, whose children were left in tears after rabbit Misty was found dead, said: "It is a real relief.

"We were all so shocked after the attack but can think about getting a rabbit again."

Helen Hadfield said "It is brilliant news."

It's not really though is it? It's horrible what's happened to all these families pets, but the dogs did what they did out of natural instinct. What should have happened is the dogs should have been supervised and secured properly by their owners.

"Brilliant news" would have been that the owners were proscecuted, and the dogs re-homed with sensible owners who would train them correctly, or at least look after them well.

It is disgusting, once an animal had had the taste of blood it wants more, I just hope the family dont have children. They should have done the right thing and had it put to sleep, all the poor animals that died didnt have a choice??????
