A DRUG mule who fled from police after his car was stopped has been spared jail.
Gareth Wolfenden, 36, was stopped at Highfield Road, Brighouse, when a passing patrol saw him hurriedly shutting the boot of his Vauxhall Astra.
But when officers tried to search the car, Wolfenden, of Charn-wood Bank, Batley, fled.
Richard Dav
ies, prosecuting, told Bradford Crown Court: "Wolfenden told the officers there was nothing in the boot and then sat in there himself picking up a silver bag before running away.
"The officer gave chase and after catching up told him he was under arrest.
"A struggle ensued during which the officer pressed his panic alarm. An off-duty colleague was nearby and the two restrained Wolfenden with CS spray."
Wolfenden, represented by Richard Wright, said he had been ordered to ferry the bag, which contained 11 small packages of cannabis, after being unable to pay his cocaine dealer.
He pleaded guilty to possession of a class C drug with intent to supply and obstructing a police officer.
Judge Roger Scott gave him a 42-week prison sentence suspended for two years and a supervision order.
Wolfenden was ordered to pay £375 costs.
