A BOOZED-UP Halifax mum who could barely stand has been jailed for being drunk in charge of her baby girl.
The 21-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail after admitting being drunk in charge of her six-month-old baby on New Year's Eve, breaching an ASBO and failure to surrender.

Calderdale magistrates heard t
hat police were called to reports of a couple arguing outside the Junction Hotel in King Cross Road, Halifax, late at night.

Police said the mum was drunk, "crying, screaming and swearing" next to her baby in a pram.

Waseem Raja, prosecuting, said: "She took the baby from the pram and began to remove its coat. The temperature was freezing. The baby only had a thin T-shirt on and had one shoe missing.

"The defendant began to hug the baby, which concerned officers as she was sitting on the floor.

"It was the officers' opinion that the defendent could barely hold herself up, never mind keep proper control of her child."

Back-up officers were called when the mum fought efforts to take the baby from her. She was held against a wall and arrested.

Police later established she was also in breach of a 2006 ASBO that banned her from threatening behaviour and being drunk in public.

Iftikhar Ahmen, representing the woman, said alcohol was an issue and she had harmed herself in the past.

He said: "She acknowledges she needs help. She also wants to get back into some form of education and have a career. She doesn't want to end up in prison."
