A RUGBY player was imprisoned after breaking a man's jaw in a late-night brawl.
Widnes Vikings player Benjamin Kavanagh, 20, of Dunce Park Close, Elland, admitted assaulting and causing grievous bodily harm to Joel Holt on March 28.

He was sentenced to eight months at a young offender institute.

Louise Azmi, prosecuting, told Bradford Crown Court the attack took place outside Dixy Chicken at Wards End, Halifax, after a night out.

She said: "Mr Holt was with friends and on his way to the takeaway when he saw Kavanagh, his girlfriend Megan Crossley and a 16-year old, who can't be named for legal reasons."

Miss Crossley and another member of the party had an argument and she slapped the man.

Mr Holt intervened and tried to calm things down but was attacked by Kavanagh.

A witness said Mr Holt fell to the ground and was punched by Kavanagh as he tried to get up.

Mrs Azmi said: "His jaw was broken in two places and he had to have a wisdom tooth removed and his jaw fitted with a titanium plate."

William Anthony Swalwell for Kavanagh, said: "His girlfriend lost her self control and he was just trying to calm her down.

"He was fearful over what would happen to her. These actions are out of character. He has never done anything like this before. He is devastated by what he has done and understands the seriousness of it."

Judge Stephen Gullick, Recorder of Bradford, said: "This was a violent attack in a public place.

"This cannot go unpunished."

Kavanagh, who played for Siddal ARLFC and represented Yorkshire, England schoolboys and England academy, moved to Widnes from Super League side Wigan earlier this year.

why a thug??
courier paints the pictures, and dont put all the evidence in the paper in these kind of cases!!

8 months in a young offenders institue!!! fair enough but lets have the same kind of punishment for everyone...at the end of the day this lad has a job and is contributing through taxes, if it was a first offence, big big fine and see if it happens again, then institue.....we have it all the wrong way round...the dreggs of society get 15 - 20 warnings and community orders before they get put away, for a couple of weeks!!

and look at the canoe man and woman...6 years!! thats because they committed fraud and ripped off a mutimillion pound company....6 YEARS
they hurt no one (apart from sons) yet people are drunk driving killing people and getting a ban...or knifing people and getting 2 years!! the judicial system is a joke!!!

Rant over!

He needs to appeal this sentence. Two months plus a big fine, plus compensation would be better.

We need consistency in sentencing. That huge Wigan prop with an unpronounable name broke a bus driver's jaw a few months ago, and walked free with a big fine. I suppose Wigan have more clout in Wigan than widnes do in Halifax

The Darwins might not have got the six years for riding a canoe if the silly cow had copped a plea, and not cost a fortune for a trial. She was never going to get away with that story about duress.

He represented England-that may be but does England want to be associated with this kind of unacceptable behavior?I think in my humble opinion that he should be removed from representing any sporting body and he deserves to be punished harshly.

i remember lampard having affairs and getting done for stuff in his youth
also rio ferdinand for his drugs fiasco, do we want to be associated with them???
first offence, im not condoning it, far from it, but everyone just has a head f*** every now and then!! and will pay for it for the rest of their life...especially if they work hard, and try to make something of themselves, where as the dreggs dont and wont care!
