THEY are on a mission to always be on time – and with these James Bond-style atomic watches bus drivers should never be shaken or stirred.
Bus firm First has issued every one of their 650 drivers in Halifax and Huddersfield with the state-of-the-art radio controlled clocks which tell the exact second of the day.

And it is hoped the watches will make 95 per cent of all their buses run on time.

The watches operate through a radio signal from a transmitter in Rugby that is linked with Greenwich Mean Time. The signal is used by most radio controlled clocks in the UK.

Matt Davies, operations director, said: "The aim is to give drivers a helping hand to get to their locations according to the timetable.

"Our passengers are already receiving a good bus service in terms of punctuality – a task made even harder with increasing congestion faced on roads in and around West Yorkshire.

"We have recently scored an impressive 93.4 per cent of all journeys being made in between the window of no more than one minute early and five minutes late, making it the third best First operating company out of 20 across the UK."

i hope all these watches have an alarm facility on them. after all, if they don't get up for work in a morning, knowing the exact time during the day whilst they are asleep in bed isn't really gonna be much good anyway, is it!

Part-time fan how can you hope to get away with calling bus drivers a lazy bunch of people. Who do you think you are to be so critical. Does your handle typify your personality? My husband is a driver with over 25 years service with First. He works long and often anti social hours. He has put up with abuse, had missiles thrown at the bus yet he and his colleagues carry on doing their work. The job is not an easy one especially when traffic is heavy. You could perhaps bear this in mind before you make derogatory remarks

What are they gonna do in traffic jams? press a button and teleport themselves to the next bus stop.
Who needs atomic clocks to drive a bus when a simple clock or watch is all that is needed. I would much prefer to see the money spent on entertainment such as a 48 inch LCD screen so we can watch a porno film whilst travelling

Apologies to those reliable ones.

However, I stand by the point I make about those drivers who choose not to leave their HQ to get their buses out on time.

Tigerswife - I'm not dull enough to make points about buses being late because of the traffic...and if you read what I've said again you'll see I make reference to those who sit their in their HQ, and dont come out to their bus normally way after their departure time.

Who do I think I am to be so critical? A very frustrated user of the bus service - one of about 50 in the queue for the 549 each evening who all share my frustrations, who pay for a shoddy bus service. I'll make whatever remarks I like when I'm let down by someone I'm paying a service for - I'm fully within my rights to do so, so perhaps you could bear this in mind. Last night (Tuesday) was the only time in over a week that the bus pulled up and left on time. The buses were in and were ready to be driven up to the stop a good 5-8 minutes before departure time - but the usual story occurred.

I'll admit that there are some drivers who are exemplory and do the service a world of good - and if you're husband is one of them, fantastic - however they are few and far between. Maybe your hubby could be given a new post of teaching the lacksidasical majority who let the bus service down so much a lesson in timekeeping, telling the time, and providing the service that they are paid for.

Does my handle typify my personality? Does your handle mean you're married to a hairy cat? Meow.

..oh and one final point - everyone puts up with rubbish in jobs - yes the drivers put up with all sorts of un-neccessary abuse...but that doesn't mean that they have a right to be un-proffessional to their customers.

So dont use that chesnut. Meow.
