Give every cop car a Taser: Police chief's plea after Halifax trials

THE Chief Constable of West Yorkshire today calls for every patrol car to carry a Taser.
The 50,000-volt zappers were successfully tested in Calderdale.

Now Sir Norman Bettison has exclusively told the Courier that the trials, which began in June when Tasers were carried by 30 beat bobbies, had gone very well.

He said: "I wouldn't want to see all officers with one as part of their uniform.

"But what I can see is all police cars being equipped with Tasers.

"If officers are called to an incident they know could be potentially violent or if a non-violent matter suddenly escalates, officers have immediate access to one."

Speaking after Friday's drama in Brig-house, in which police shot a man with a conventional gun, he said: "The whole point of Tasers is to protect the public and police in the face of violence.

"I want people to understand the benefits of police having Tasers, not for Tasers to put fear in people.

"Without the Taser, police have either a baton – which can cause serious injuries – or, in the case of firearms officers, a gun. And wherever possible we don't want people being shot."

Well I mean.

If every police vehicle had a teaser they would all be like the young copper from Greater Manchester, reputed to have had his hands half full.

Law abiding people, who conduct themselves in a decent manner will probably have no issue with the police carrying tasers. I certainly would never give them the cause to shoot me with one.

You see, time after time on tv doccumentaries where the officer deploys one and the assailant is dibilitated immediately. This has surely got to be preferable to either having to deploy firearms (I know these will be classed as firearms) or for the officers to receive injuries in the course of their work.

I would think that only a small minority of people would argue police carrying tazers would be a bad idea. Unfortunately, as always, it's the gobby minority, and they seem to get they're own way.
People, particularly cocky teens, treat the police like ****. I've regularly seen them shouting and swearing at police men and women, and asking them for a fight. They might think twice if they were going to get tazered.

I'd rather not have the average police officer in posession of such a powerful weapon, you can find video after video of police using these weapons when somebody they are talking to starts to talk back to them. The police officer can't accept somebody is challenging his authority and electrocutes them, no thanks.

R S, did no one ever tell you not to talk back?

If you had some respect for figures of authority you wouldnt get electrocuted.

Dont challenge the polices authority and everything is fine. they are there to do a job let them do it and if that include tazers or guns i am all for it.
