Greetland smoking pub shut down: Man behind stunt had no licence

A Calderdale pub which allowed smoking has been shut down.
Last week Stuart Smith basked in national media coverage as he sat proudly behind the bar of the Golden Fleece, Greetland, puffing on a cigarette.
He claimed to be the licensee and vowed to fight any attempts to stop smoking on the premises.
"I am not going to take this lightly. I would appeal any conviction and I'm going to take this all the way," said 39-year-old Mr Smith.
But it transpired he hever had a licence for the Golden Fleece and had no right to run the pub.
And now Mr Smith has jumped pubs to the College Arms, Huddersfield, again saying customers can light up when he reopens it - but the pub's owners say that will not happen.
He has used the pubs for publicity through his 18-year-old son Luke - the last licensee at the Golden Fleece.
Admiral Taverns, of Hertfordshire, own both pubs.
"Stuart Smith has no relationship with Admiral Taverns. His son does," said a spokesman.
"His son has a temporary licence for the College Arms but does not have the necessary licensing permission to open it.
"We are still deciding the future of that pub and have no current plans for that pub to be opened and our understanding is it is not going to open."
The last drinks were served on Sunday at the Golden Fleece and the locks have now been changed.
Licensing officers and the company acted after the widespread media reports of Mr Smith's illegal stance.
Calderdale licensing officer David Drucquer said: "Mr Smith is not and never has been the licensee and we have not had an application from him to become the licensee.
"There is no person there with a licence allowing them to sell alcohol and therefore the premises cannot trade."
A Calderdale Council spokeswoman said it was an unusual case in which the authority, the police and Admiral Taverns worked together to shut the pub.
The council issues premises licenses and personal licences and the police act as an enforcement arm when action is taken against licensed premises.
An investigation is ongoing regarding Mr Smith and alleged activities at other licensed premises, she said.
Luke Smith started at the Golden Fleece in mid-December and quit last week to live in Huddersfield just before his father hit the headlines.
"I did not know anything about it until my mate text me," said Luke.
"I think he is a sad act to be honest but I get on with him most of the time.
"He was on the Jeremy Kyle show the other week about something to do with him and his partner Katie Beattie.
"He loves publicity and was on some sort of documentary before that but he is serious about the smoking ban and is willing to go to court over it."
Luke, who ran a bar in Cypus last year, said the Golden Fleece was doing ok but he wanted a more lively town-centre pub and has not ruled out working with his dad in the future.
The pub is listed "to let" on the Admiral Taverns website.
