MEET brothers Stephen and Philip Short – officially Calder-dale's best fowl farmers.
At just 11 and eight years old respectively, the pair, of Long Lane, Southowram, may be nippers but when it comes to hens and ducks they are maestroes.

And they proved exactly how good they with the birds when they won three awards between them at Halifax Agricultural Show this weekend.

Stephen, a Year 8 pupil at Brighouse High School, said: "I've been looking after hens since I was two, I love it, I want to be a farmer."
He took the Best White Peking and Best Any Other Variety duck awards – both open age competitions. Brother Philip, a Year 4 pupil at Withinfields Primary, was Best Young Handler.

Stephen, who wears his trademark flat cap everywhere and sells eggs to his teachers every week, said: "It feels great. I've won a few competitions but it's nice to win at the local show."

The pair, whose dad Mark and mum Liz are both accountants, look after about 150 birds and several cats between them.

They said they caught the farming bug from their granddad, Willie.
Philip said: "It's hard but it's fun. It's great to win."

Mum Liz said: "I'm so proud, they do it all themselves, and me and their dad just eat the eggs."
