THIS teenager is no stranger to winning rosettes – she showed her first goat when she was just two years old.
Jessica Hagain, from Hipperholme, was one of the youngest entrants competing at this year's Halifax Agricultural Show.

The thirteen-year-old, a pupil at North Halifax Grammar School, has been helping breed and show goats most of her life.

Her herd includes goats named Eleanor and Dumbledore.

She said: "I enjoy it, I've got five goats in my herd.

"My friends think it's great. Some of them come round and have a go at milking them."

Her dad Chris became chief steward and secretary of the goat section of the Halifax show in 2000.

His parents also kept goats and he is passing his knowledge on to Jessica.

"She took her first goat around a ring at the Great Yorkshire Show when she was two years old," he said.

"She does most of the work looking after them. If I'm away for any reason then she'll look after mine, too.

"Jessica loves doing it. In the summer we travel all over the place going to shows, from Coventry up to the Scottish borders and out to the east and west coasts."

The goat section was cancelled at last year's show because of a foot-and-mouth outbreak but Mr Hagain said people were pleased to see the animals back.

"We're down on entries because of the blue-tongue restrictions but, compared with the rest of the shows, we've still got a good turn out."
