Halifax RLFC coach Matt Calland punched a fellow drinker and knocked him off his chair in a nightclub.
Calland, 37, admitted assaulting Slawomir Sejda at Jumpin' Jaks, Ward's End, Halifax.
Andy Wills, prosecuting at Calderdale Magistrates Court, said on September 6 at 9.30pm Calland and a friend were seen drinking at the bar and seen talking to Mr Sejda.
"Eventually all three went to sit down at a table," said Mr Wills. "While sitting down, the defendant, completely unprovoked, punched the complainant squarely in the face."
Mr Sejda fell on the floor but Calland and his friend were thrown out of the club before a fight broke out.
He suffered a cut and a swollen, bruised nose.
Mr Wills said Calland has previous convictions.
Graham Goldsborough, for Calland, who lives in Littleborough, said that day he had been told that a close friend was terminally ill.
He was fined £250 and ordered to pay £100 compensation with £60 prosecution costs.
