A WOMAN had to be cut from the wreckage of her car as a road smash shut one of Calderdale's busiest routes.

The crash, between a silver Mazda and red Peugeot 306, happened at 12.13pm today on Salterhebble Hill, Salterhebble, Halifax.

The female driver of the Mazda, said to be middle aged, was cut out of her vehicle by Halifax firefighters and taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital with back injuries.

The male Peugeot driver received minor injuries but his car was left wrecked, with the rear wheel snapped off.

Watch manager Howard Young of Halifax fire station, said: "It was a nasty crash and the woman was obviously in a lot of pain.

"We had to cut her car into pieces to get her out safely in the end."

The road was closed at the junction with Dudwell Lane for nearly two hours, with traffic diverted via Siddal.

Police say another impatient driver crashed as he tried to overtake the standstill traffic.

Police, ambulance and three fire engines from Halifax and Elland attended the scene.
