A VOLUNTARY project that uses cycling to keep youngsters on the right track wants to build some wacky bikes.
But Cycle Re Cycle, which set up a branch in Elland earlier this year, needs a welder with a good imagination and creative skills to help them realise their dream of creating some unusual bicycles. The project, which also runs in Huddersfield and Bra
dford, trains youngsters – including those referred to them by the police and probation service – to repair and maintain bikes, turning old cycles and parts into new vehicles.
Its parent company, Crack It Up Cycling For All, works to promote cycling across the board to the young, disabled, elderly people and other groups.
Now, in a bid to work together, Crank It Up has asked Cycle Re Cycle to build a variety of unusual bikes – including circus bikes, mini bikes at just 12 inches high and bicycles where the wheels move in the opposite direction to the handlebars – to be to used in one of their workshops.
Tony Edmonds, who runs Cycle Re Cycle, said: "These unusual bikes are used in a fun session where people who don't cycle or at least don't cycle regularly can come along and have a great laugh riding these unusual bikes.
"The more fun they have the more chance there is that they will cycle more often."
