ONE of Calderdale's most unusual historic buildings, Scout Hall, failed to reach its reserve of £350,000 when it was put up for auction.
The listed building at Shibden, Halifax, was built around 1678 by silk importer John Mitchell.

It is said to be a calendar house with 365 panes of glass, 12 bays and 52 doors.

The hunting scene over the main entrance and various playing card symbols depict the original owner's interest in gambling.

Part of the property was occupied in the 1980s but has been empty ever since and many of the floors have been removed.

It is now on the English Heritage buildings at risk register.

Scout Hall was unsuccessful in the Eddison's auction at Leeds United's Elland Road football ground but is still available for sale privately.

"It is now on the English Heritage buildings at risk register" - oh good, so it will fall down like so many others.

The £350k price tag would normally be a good price, but think of the cost of renovating the building to English Heritage Standards (using the materials that they would make you use!).

why not just knock it down and sell the land - you'll probably get more than the £350k asking price, and will go towards plugging the £12m budget gap they are now on about.

A bit like M.O. It's been a wreck for at least 100 years.
I Know because I used to clean the windows and oil the hinges.

The building is unuseable and the location is against any sale.
Once it was going to be a large hotel and resturant and that fell through.

#7 sounds like the ideal site of a new prison.

You can't save everything. It has to have something special, and Scout Hall simply hasn't.
