CALDERDALE'S hospital is among the worst in Yorkshire for unclean wards, say patients.
A survey of in-patients put Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust in the bottom five in the region.
Eight per cent of people rated the ward they stayed in not very or not at all clean.
Only Bradford, Mid Yorkshire, and Scarborough and north east Yorkshire, where the figures were 10 per cent, and Leeds, where the number was 9 per cent, were ranked below Calderdale and Huddersfield.
The report by health watchdog the Healthcare Commission asked in-patients about their hospital experiences.
Of those who replied, 27 per cent said they had stayed in a mixed sex sleeping area.
And food was rated poor by 18 per cent.
But overall, Calderdale's hospital received good marks from its patients with 42 per cent rating their care as excellent. A further 36 per cent said treatment was very good and 15 per cent said it was good.
The trust's medical director Yvette Oade said: "Every one of the results contained in the in-patient survey is of interest and importance to us – we are never complacent and will continue to listen to patients and work on those areas where improvements need to continue.
"We are independently recognised as one of the top-performing hospital trusts in the country and we are constantly doing everything we can to maintain this position for local people."
Trust chairman Sukhdev Sharma said: "Our patients are central to everything we do and so to hear of their approval in such a resounding way is a tremendous and well-deserved boost for our staff.
"This year we have treated just under 100,000 in-patients, the most ever, and we always try to make sure they receive the best treatment from us at all times."
The trust was ranked in the top 20 per cent in the UK for confidence and trust in doctors and nurses, privacy during treatment and staff answering questions about treatment and procedures.
