Houses plan is rejected
COUNCILLORS have voted in favour of green fields rather than affordable houses in a wooded Triangle valley.
The redevelopment of Kebroyd Mills has been refused because some of the land earmarked for low-cost housing is in the green belt.
In 2006 Calderdale Council approved plans for the mills to be turned into 98 flats, but a massive blaze last year destroyed one of the biggest buildings.
The whole scheme had to be redesigned.
Property Solutions (North West) Ltd wanted to construct 19 new properties and give a registered social landlord space for 10 affordable houses.
Councillor Geoffrey Wallace (Independent, Mixenden and Illingworth), had supported the proposals.
He said: "Open space has been encroached upon but affordable housing is a desirable reason."
Chairman of the meeting councillor Martin Peel (Con, Sowerby Bridge), said: "I don't think there is a member here on this council who does not want affordable housing. But one of the things that would be lost is open space."
