How Unison strike will hit Calderdale: libraries, schools closures latest

THE two-day strike by up to 3,000 Unison members in Calderdale – due to begin tomorrow – is expected to affect a wide range of services including schools, libraries, council offices and other public buildings.

Calderdale Council has apologised for any inconvenience and is working to try to keep disruption to a minimum.

Council premises closed to the public on both days are:


  • Westgate House

  • Halifax Town Hall

  • Hebden Bridge Picture House

  • Halifax Central Library

  • Elland Library

  • Hebden Bridge Library

  • King Cross Library

  • Mytholmroyd Library

  • Skircoat Library

  • Todmorden Library

  • Jerusalem Farm campsite

  • Hebden Bridge council offices

  • Learning Disability/ Mental Health Services at Chatham Street, Royd Square, Clay House and Hipperholme

  • Todmorden Market

  • Horton House

  • There will be a minimal street cleaning and transport service.



Shibden Hall, Rastrick Library and Sowerby Bridge Library will be closed tomorrow.

Todmorden High School, Scout Road Primary School, Mytholmroyd, Sowerby Village Church of England Primary School and Burnley Road Junior and Infant School, Mytholmroyd, will be closed on both days.

Highbury School, at Rastrick, Tuel Lane Infant School, Sowerby Bridge, and Cornholme Junior, Infant and Nursery School 'Cornholme Junior, Infant and Nursery School will be closed on Wednesday and open from Y1 upwards on Thursday. Foundation stage will be closed both days.

Schools that will be open but subject to some disruption include Cross Lane Primary at Elland, Greetland Primary, New Road Primary, Sowerby Bridge, Riverside Junior, Hebden Bridge, Shade Primary School, Todmorden, Wainstalls Junior and Infant School and Walsden Junior School.

The council has advised all parents to contact schools directly to confirm the details.The Unison strike has been called to support a pay claim of 6 per cent or 50p an hour, whichever is the greater.

Employers have offered 2.45 per cent which, with inflation running at 4.3 per cent, Unison claims is a pay cut for 600,000 local government workers across the country.

well if we cant have services we dont need council employees.
