THOMAS Carr's mother, Mrs Julie Carr, told the Courier: "The night he came home it was obvious he was drunk.
"His safety, and that of others, was all I could think about.

"I rang the police straight away. I didn't even know which was the right number to ring.

"I just said my son has taken the car without permission and that he had been drinking.

"It was terrible to see him in court.

"You want to be the perfect family in the perfect scenario, but that's just not real life.

"I would urge anyone else to do the same thing.

"It is hard but at the end of the day it is not only theirs, but other people's safety."

halifax1982, perhaps you would have thought differently if his car had careered into a member of your family and seriously injured or killed them?

Halifax-Dave it is reporting your family that I find hard to understand.
The drink driving is unforgiveable.
However, I would not have even let my son out of the house to get in a car if he had been drinking, so maybe some people just like the drama and attention.

p.s i didn't say she was wrong for reporting him, what I am trying to say is taht I don't know if I would have been able to do the same if my son had done that.
But as I said in my above comment, my son would not have even got out of the house, let alone into a car.

Halifax1982, u say that drink driving is unforgivable, and i agree with you there. i also think that rape is unforgivable, as is murder, assualt, abusing children etc..... if you knew one of your family members had done one of the other crimes mentioned above, would you still think it wrong to report them? you say you would not have let your son out of the house had he been drinking, so whats is your plan to protect him from committing a crime - lock him in 24/7?

Halifax Dave.... i did not say anywhere she was wrong or that I would not do the same. I said I was not sure if I could do it.
In respect of not letting my son out of the house, I meant that if he was at home and drinking then decided to go out in his car, if I was around and awake I would not let him out of the house. I didn't say he will be kept under lock and key 24/7 of course there will be times when I am not with him, a lot of the time as he gets older probably, in which case I will be powerless to stop him. However, if I am there should he try to do something so stupid then I would stop him doing it before it reaches the point of me having to shop him to the police.
All the other crimes you mention are a completely different league and if I knew my son had done any of them then yes I would report him to protect others and get justice for those he had harmed.
However, I am bringing up my son correctly and he knows that crime, whatever it is, is wrong so I will never be in such a situation!
