LABOUR councillors have again put the Conservatives in the Calderdale Council driving seat.
Despite calls for a cross-party coalition to form the Cabinet, all seven seats will again be held by Tories.

Liberal Democrat leader Janet Battye (Calder) told the annual meeting of the council that for the third year running, an unofficial pact b
etween the largest and smallest political groups had deprived her members of a say in how the authority is run.

"Yet again, we have been excluded from a fair share of the power – the Conservatives being quite happy to receive support from Labour," she said.

Seven of the nine Labour councillors voted in favour of the Cabinet remaining unchanged with only Danielle Coombes (Lab, Ovenden) and Helen Rivron (Lab, Ovenden) dissenting.

It means Ann McAllister (Rastrick) continues as leader, Stephen Baines (Northowram and Shelf) is deputy leader, Amanda Byrne (Sowerby Bridge) is responsible for community services, Craig Whittaker (Rastrick) schools and young people's services, David Kirton (Hipperholme and Lightcliffe) regeneration and development, Graham Hall (Hipperholme and Lightcliffe) corporate services and Graham Reason (Northowram and Shelf) health and social care.

Retiring Mayor Martin Peel (Sowerby Bridge) has replaced Grenville Horsfall (Skircoat) as chairman of the planning committee and Coun Horsfall has taken over from Keith Watson (Greetland and Stainland) as licensing committee chairman.

Roger Taylor (Con, Northowram and Shelf) is the council's new police authority spokesman, in place of fellow Conservative Geraldine Carter (Ryburn).

Councillor Ginley and Brian Smith (Lab, Ovenden) will represent the council on the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority and Geoffrey Wainwright (Con, Skircoat) and Labour leader Tim Swift (Town) will be the representatives on the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority.

Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) is the new chairman of the community services scrutiny panel.

Dave U,

Outlane - amended post 15/05/2008 19:00:04
Gutless Labour have done it again.
However, does Cllr Battye think that any taxpayer would want her involved with local finances, given her total waste of our money recently? Money that seems to have gone up in a puff of smoke.
I hope some of those councillors named will show a bit more respect for the taxpayers, instead of criticising us.
I won't mention Timesheets - Councillor Park may soon have some kind of record. She has NOT bothered to complete a return since July 2007. I realise that there is no legal requirement on councillors but there is a moral one. Perhaps Cllr Battye should have a word with Cllr Park. Bring back Patrick!

I wouldn't dare, exile! Cllr Battye would have my guts for garters, as they used to say in the old days, and get the Council to investigate (at great cost).

Gutless labour, David?

Since when did politicians ever vote themselves a pay cut? The price of their support is an extra £8000 each.

Cllr Tim Swift,

There was no proposal made at the Council meeting for an 'all party' cabinet - the Lib Dems did not put anyone up for Cabinet, but then voted against, which just seemed to us like a pointless gesture. Yes, we agreed with the Tories that we would chair most of the scrutiny panels - and, as last year, we will not hesitate to challenge them and to fight for the policies we believe in.

If the Lib Dems are going to be the opposition, as they claim, then we look forward to seeing it - unlike the last year, when they refused to back us on key issues such as challenging the new waste contract, or opposing the transfer of another quarter of the home care service to the private sector.
