Makeover for Katie's memorial garden

A MEMORIAL garden for a teenage girl who died of meningitis is getting a makeover.
The garden at Rastrick High School was created in memory of former student 16-year-old Katie Paine.
Katie died in 1998 and over the last 10 years the garden has become overgrown and in need of attention.
So pupils got inspiration from a trip to a garden centre.
The Year 8 volunteers want to start planting areas to create a forget-me-not garden in memory of all students who have lost their lives.
They went to Armitage's Garden Centre in Birchencliffe, where they spent time with centre staff asking questions and picking plants before finishing with a well-deserved treat of homemade cakes and refreshments.
Teacher Peta Godfrey said: "Kids don't often have a chance to get their hands dirty these days which is why I think this is a great way of not only enhancing the school environment, but showing them what fun they can have in the garden.
"They might start off a bit reluctant but they end up really enjoying doing things like planting bulbs, digging in compost and pushing wheelbarrows."
Andrew Tyers, garden centre manager, said: "It's great to see the children from Rastrick High have such initiative and passion for restoring the garden. We're very happy to be able to help and hope that the planting advice and tour of the centre given today will be invaluable to the project."
Katie's parents Alison and John have contributed towards the cost of the new plants and will be invited to the official reopening of the garden in July.
