A MAN was jailed for two years for stabbing his friend in a fight over two women.
David Dykes, 25, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on Daniel O'Donohue in an unprovoked attack on May 17.
Judge Jonathan Rose branded Dykes a "bully" and a "thug" and likened his behaviour to that of a "petulant child."
Bradford Crown C
ourt heard that Dykes and his friend had been drinking in Halifax town centre and met two women.
Shufqat Khan, prosecuting, said all four went back to one of the women's homes.
He said: "Dykes became upset when the two females paid more attention to Mr O'Donohue instead of him."
Dykes took two knives from the kitchen and threw them both across the room.
Mr O'Donohue tried to calm him down and persuade him to leave but a scuffle broke out.
The incident spilled outside and the pair began fighting on the floor.
Mr Khan said: "During the course of that fight, Dykes used a knife to stab Mr O'Donohue twice in the left-hand side of his head and the right-hand side of his chest."
Afterwards, Dykes, of Ottley Road, Shipley, phoned one of the women and sent threatening texts to her telling her to dispose of the weapon.
He was arrested but told police officers that Mr O'Donohue must have stabbed himself as he was grappling with him.
Robin Mairs, for Dykes, said: "It is clear there is genuine contrition behind the guilty plea."
Judge Jonathan Rose told Dykes: "You are a bully and a thug.
"You have a history showing violence, the use of violence, the use of intimidation and the use of bad behaviour in public that you have taken on yourself as a way of life in the last 10 to 12 years."
He added: "When you took a knife from that kitchen, you put yourself into the position of a person who could kill and you put your friend in the position of someone who could die."
He said the use of a knife must be marked by a prison sentence to send a message to others who may arm themselves in similar situations.
