A MAN who was stabbed to death on a Calderdale street has been named locally as father-of-three Billy Khan.
The 33-year-old died after allegedly being struck with what is thought to have been a machete or samurai sword.
Dozens of shocked neighbours gathered on the streets as police taped off the area between Catherine Street and Langdale Street, Elland, where the attack happened at teatime on Friday.
Police are continuing to question three men, aged 28, 39 and 50.
Another man, aged 35, thought to be Mr Khan's brother, was also stabbed and remains in a serious condition in hospital today.
A third man suffered minor injuries to his hand.
Police have confirmed the dead man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of criminal damage. He was released on Friday pending further inquiries.
Friends of Mr Khan lit candles and placed them on the wall near where the attack happened.
They then held hands and prayed for him.
One resident said she had seen a man lying in the street next to a lamp-post and heard someone say he was not breathing. Another said police were often called out to the area but she had never heard of such a serious attack happening before.
The street – near Elland town centre – is made up mainly of terrace houses.
A post mortem examination was taking place this afternoon.
A police spokesman said: "Three local men have been arrested in connection with this incident.
"They are currently being questioned by detectives.
"We can confirm that both men received knife wounds during the incident.
"Inquiries are ongoing."
West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Inquiry Team is leading the investigation.
