A £7 million Lottery bid is being drawn up to transform the Piece Hall into a stunning town square at the heart of Halifax.
The plans are to create a breathtaking and theatrical enclosure which will become a major leisure and cultural destination.

The scheme will make the Piece Hall the centre-piece of the town's regeneration programme, which is gathering pace with projects including Somerset House, the Shay stadium and the Broad Street leisure and retail centre.

The Courier is backing the bid, which will be put to the Heritage Lottery Fund in September. The whole transformation of the Piece Hall into a vibrant public square could become a £15 million investment with further money to follow from Yorkshire Forward, Calderdale Council and private investors.

Details of the exciting proposals show the historic building housing a centre for creative businesses, upmarket shops and a 4,000-seat amphitheatre. It is hoped work will begin in 2012.

"We want to put in restaurants, bistros and cafe bars, workshops and exhibition space for artists and creative businesses," said the council's community services director Kersten England.

New businesses would go on the top floor and the units on the middle floor would be turned into high quality shops.

"The sort of thing we are talking about is niche, upmarket retailers visitors will travel miles to see. We want to put restaurants and bars on the lower floor, renovating the cellars and creating a new entrance, which English Heritage has said is feasible."

But the biggest change will be to the courtyard which will become a fabulous town square with raked stone seating, a large multi-purpose performance area and a movable stage.

The Piece Hall was built for the sale of cloth pieces in 1779 and restored by the council in 1979. But it has struggled recently to find a useful role.

"We want to provide workshops for artists, crafts people. and 21st century businesses," she said.

The ideas behind this bid have been eagerly awaited and privately some people have said, apart from York Minster, the Piece Hall is the most worthy development in Yorkshire.

Thank Heaven, at last something to write home about?
Providing they stick to renovating and not converting into flats and hotels and other out of character alterations. The Piece Hall restored as the original look Piece Hall, I'll have some of that Mr.Courier.

Do these plans involve re-opening the industrial museum? If not, what will happen to the artefacts still in the museum which has been closed for many years?

If the Shay is anything to go by (£5m to finish the stand) then at least £50m will be required for the Piece Hall (plus another 20 years waiting for it to happen)!!

Good news!
If it is finally relaunched as a business and leisure project, I hope that it will not later be killed off again by the Council.

If this comes off, just need to rid the Town of the vermin that hangs around spitting, swearing and thieving on a daily basis to make it a Town which might be worth visiting.

#6 I think you will find that this is EXACTLY the type of project the Lottery Heritage Fund was set up to undertake. The Lottery Heritage Fund's own website states:- "Using money raised through the National Lottery, the Heritage Lottery Fund sustains and transforms our heritage. From museums, parks and historic places to archaeology, natural environment and cultural traditions we invest in every part of our diverse heritage".

If the Piece Hall is not an "historic place", I am not sure what is. Perhaps you know differently.

I'm sceptical that unless a roof is part of the project and escalators replace the stairs people will still prefer to get in their cars & drive to the Malls.

Folk don't like wind and rain on their heads nor do they like using their legs.

#9 perhaps the Lottery Heritage Fund could run to a retractable roof like that on the Centre Court at Wimbledon.

Good news at last. It sounds excellent, BUT I’d like to know who, apart from the council, has been involved in developing the project and where can we see the plans? And are they incorporating the new proposed Halifax Museum in the old Industrial museum?
