A MOTHER was conditionally discharged for 12 months after admitting carrying an offensive weapon.
Linda Fletcher, 39 of Unity Court, Crowtrees Lane, Rastrick, admitted the charge to Calderdale magistrates after being found carrying a Stanley knife in her bag.
Jane Farrar, prosecuting, said police had been called to an address at the Oaklands, B
righouse, on August 21, following reports of an argument.
When they arrived they spoke to Fletcher and found the knife.
Mrs Farrar said: "She was interviewed by police and admitted being at the address to sort something out from a previous day." She said Fletcher had admitted the knife was visible when she visited the house, but had apologised for it.
"She was not happy at the situation."
Kieran Green, for Fletcher said: "I think it is sad that as soon as the word knife is involved. a person is charged and put before the court.
"She had initially been cautioned for the offence but because of the present climate, she was charged."
Mr Green said that on the day Fletcher visited the address she wanted to speak to the family about an incident with her disabled son.
He said Fletcher had previously been threatened by the family who had been abusive towards her.
"When she went to speak to the family she became aware that the knife was still in her bag but made no attempt to remove it or produce it in front of the family.
"She had it with her because she found the family frightening and initmidating.
"She feels ashamed by her actions and knows what she did was wrong."
