A MAN on trial for causing the death of a Brighouse teenager was seen performing dangerous stunts in his customised car, a court heard.
Craig Bergin's friend filmed him on a mobile phone "drifting" his canary-yellow Vauxhall Tigra round in a circle outside Matalan, in Berry Lane.
Bergin, 20, of Shay Lane, Halifax, denies causing death by dangerous driving just a few weeks later on January 10, 2007.
Naomi Gough, 19, died instantly after her Renault Clio crashed into a safety barrier on Burdock Way, Halifax. A jury at Bradford Crown Court heard how Bergin swerved towards her car causing her to lose control.
Oliver Townsend, a friend of Miss Gough's, met friends at the car park on December 13, 2006.
Between 20 and 30 other cars gathered there.
There he saw Bergin and a few other drivers making hand-brake turns, known as "doughnutting".
He said: "Drifting your car around like that you are not in full control of it."
He described it as "dangerous" as people were standing 12 metres away.
Prosecutor Ben Crosland asked: "What is the purpose of doing that?"
Mr Townsend replied: "Just to show off, really."
The court also heard that on December 27, 2006, Bergin drove on the wrong side of the road head-on towards Rebecca Field's Vauxhall Corsa, stopping only inches from the bonnet.
Miss Field and passenger Rebecca Taylor told the jury they were travelling in Windy Bank Lane, Halifax, when Bergin, who they both knew, appeared.
Neither realised it was him until the car stopped.
Miss Field said: "It was not far away, probably about half a metre away from my bumper."
