RESIDENTS in a Halifax suburb are being driven to despair claiming town centre workers are using their streets as a car park.
Homeowners in streets across Savile Park say they are plagued by a daily traffic of commuters clogging up parking spaces outside their properties for up to 10 hours a day.

A recent Courier story highlighted the problem at Rothwell Road, Savile Park, but the cars have merely moved on to other streets nearby.

Savile Park Road resident Paul Evitts said: "It is an absolute nightmare for us and a real pain.

"I have had to put so many notes on car windscreens asking people to park considerately.

"I have ordered 50 pre-written ones to be done up on a computer.

"A lot of families with young children need the access and I've had my garage blocked several times.

"We've been asking the council for help for years but big businesses in town need to do their bit as well – they just get away with it at the minute."

Elaine Taylor said her severely disabled granddaughter is often forced to be dropped a long way from her home in Haugh Shaw Road due to the traffic.

"It has been horrendous and is getting worse," said Mrs Taylor. "Sometimes we are fighting to get through the traffic.

"The neighbours obviously know to leave a space but the minute it's free another car comes in and we have to park a long way away and push her wheelchair home."

Calderdale Council officials say they will be introducing parking restrictions in Rothwell Road as soon as maintenance work is finished and are considering implementing them further.

Nick Moore, of Engineering Services, said: "A borough-wide parking policy review is currently being carried out by the council, which may address the concerns of residents in neighbouring streets"

The residents do not own the streets. Provided cars have valid tax, insurance and MOT they are parking within the law.

Andy - agree residents don't own streets but if only life were so simple.
See RT Act re: causing uneccessary obstruction.
See Highway Code re Parking both sides of road etc.

Unfortunately peaople nowadays think they can park anyway regardless of the effect on others.

People will park where it is free. Parking in Halifax is a rip off. It should be free for anyone that works in the town, seeing as though it is the people who work here that drive the local economy.

The council needs to remove all the extra parking meters they put up over the last 2 years so people can park on the streets around the town centre and then you won't have this problem. Or they can continue to put up more parking zones, pay more parking attendants and run up an even bigger parking budget deficit. Noobs.

The owners of the houses should not have bought an house there if they wanted an empty space outside for parking on. people have always parked there.

They don't park within the law though. On Haugh Shaw Road / Arden Road cars regularly park too close to junctions, on pavements and even across residents driveways! I seen one car get towed away because the owner of the blocked driveway caused such a fuss, but I've never seen any cars ticketed.

I wrote to the Council when the idea of the parking meters was first mooted saying all that would happen is parkers would end up clogging residential areas where they could park all day for free, but they didn't even give me the courtesy of a reply.

What is especially concerning is the increased risk to the children of Holy Trinity and St Marys junior schools who are right in the middle of where the parking seems worse. But very little seems to get done about it. Does a child have to be killed first, I wonder?

The number of streets in and around the town centre, with meters, that remain largely empty during the day just goes to prove that the meter scheme was a waste of time. If workers could park in the same place all day without having to move then at least they'd be more likely to pay, but o no, there's a time limit because we need to allow spaces for all the shoppers we get in Halifax! NOT!

Hellfire. How very wrong you are! Know the facts before posting assumptions like that. Fool.

Hellfire I agree with you. when I purchase a house the parking situation is always a factor. If it's street parking then can i get a space?? if not then It influences my decision. Other people should take this into account too.
