PIGEON enthusiasts flocked to a charity auction of the birds organised by Calderdale racing clubs for a disabled member.
Life-long pigeon racer Terry Divers, 45, of Ovenden, Halifax, has been paralysed from the waist down for 24 years after an horrific motorcycle crash and friends and family say it is his love of the birds which has helped him through the pain.
Now kind-hearted members of Luddenden Foot Homing Society, Ogden Homing Society and Halifax Flying Club have raised nearly £5,000 through a Young Bird Squeaker auction to get Terry a car seat to allow him easier access to his family motor – and to his pigeons.
More than 100 people turned out at Belgrave Social Club, Claremount Road, Halifax, to see around 60 pedigree birds auctioned off.
Some such as La Prima Vera and Lady Jumbo were valued at around £500.
Mr Divers's wife of 18 years, Janet, said: "Today means so much for us and we are so grateful to everyone who helped out.
"Terry's birds have really helped him through the bad times."
Derek Brearley, secretary of the Luddenden Foot society of which Terry is a member, said: "We hope this will help Terry and his family.
"He's a good lad and a larger-than-life character. We're just pleased to be helping."
