IT will be food for fingerprints for pupils in Todmorden after a controversial new method to pay for school dinners was adopted.
The system, introduced at Todmorden High School, takes details of children's fingerprints and allows them to pay for their dinner by touching their thumb on a screen.

The biometric method is still in its infancy and has sparked nationwide controversy. It was recently introduced at Morley High School, Leeds, prompting parent protest about putting children's identities at risk.

But several Calderdale schools have expressed an interest and Patrick O'Connor, headmaster of Todmorden High School, said: "It is working really well. I never had any doubts about this system.

"We are the first in Calderdale to introduce the scheme but it doesn't scare us at all. We are very proud and excited to be in that position."

The biometric system was first introduced by Tony Mulgrew, catering manager at the school, in summer. And after a successful probation period it was fully implemented this term.

Mr Mulgrew said: "It's working well. Queues are down, it stops any bullying and over the last four weeks we've had a 13 per cent rise in children taking up free school meals allowances they were embarrassed about before."

Parent Rebecca Frost, of Portsmouth, Todmorden, has a son, James, 13, at the school. she said: "The first I heard of it was when James came home and told me about it. It seems to work but I prefer the old system."

Todmorden Town councillor Sandra Townley said: "There is a question of civil liberty and perhaps it would be better to tackle the roots of bullying."

What's wrong with each child having a school credit card?

What an absolutely filthy idea. Does every child wash their hands after visiting the lavatory?

This scheme also enables a record to be kept of what the child is actually buying and eating which amounts to surveillance. Is this desirable? Does the child have the right to opt out of such a surveillance scheme? Does a child have a right to some independence and privacy? We really need to think about how such schemes impact on the right to a private life of us all. They are not such a good idea when looked at the point of view of having a right to a private life away from an ever-increasing authoritarian state trying to dictate to us all how we live our lives.

You don't need to shout Shart! - I thought looking at 20th Century History and living in Berlin you would be more than aware of how the authorities can use excessive surveillance. The right to choose to opt out such surveillance is not only removed from benefits claimants, who coincidently are now being asked in many cases to provide much more information than is necessary to process a claim but also it appears our children!

anyone who thinks this is a good idea ought to go and read a couple of books, i can suggest you look at "IBM and the holocaust " by edwin black ,or "war against the weak " same author .did you know that the uk has the largest DNA register in the world ? this biometrics will end up enslaving us all if people do not go and look at history ,and see the consequences of all this information gathering. did you know that if you have your fingerprints taken in this country they are stored on a database in USA? this is conditioning to get your children used to giving over personal and private information without question .it is disgusting

Do the people against this send their kids out wearing gloves so that they don't leave fingerprints for people to "mis-use"? What is the problem? They can have mine anytime. My DNA and fingerprints are no use to anyone because I don't commit criminal offences.
