PRIZES were handed out as a school broke up for the summer.
The William Henry Smith School, Boothroyd, Brighouse, held its annual open day and prizegiving to celebrate pupils' achievements.

Prizes were presented by Diane Smith, a former member of staff and school governor.

Head of support services Lynne
Reeve said: "We have three open days throughout the year and prizegiving is one of our favourites, because it celebrates our pupils' achievements. Despite the weather, we had a strong turnout of friends and family and it made a special day for our boys."

Diane first worked at the residential special school, which provides education and care for boys with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, in 1982 when she was appointed school nurse.

She retired in 1997 but agreed to become a trustee of the Smith Foundation and a governor of the school in 2002.

Head teacher Brendan Heneghan said: "Diane's work in this capacity is greatly appreciated and her assistance in helping the school continue to move forward is of great value.

"The day was about achievements and Diane has had many.

"She says her greatest achievements are raising her family, undertaking a moon walk recently, which is equivalent to a half marathon and being the youngest nurse to be appointed to the position of sister at Halifax Infirmary. And that's not to mention the tap dancing!

"Diane is a true friend of the William Henry Smith School and we were delighted she was able to present the awards to our pupils."
