Online bargain hunters were able to bid for the Sea Harrier jump jet, which seller Chris Wilson put on the auction site with a starting bid of just 99p.

Bidding for the 45ft-long former Royal Navy aircraft with a 26ft wing span topped £26,000 pounds, the reserve price, before the auction ended.

Owner Chris, 30, a former RAF airframe fitter who restores old aircraft for a living, said: "There are a few footballers who like the idea of having one on display in their back gardens.

"You would need quite a bit of space to fit it but it is stunning.
"We also had a lot of interest from museums and companies that wanted something extraordinary outside their offices."

The Sea Harrier FA2 jump jet was commissioned 21 years ago and used in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm for 10 years.

It completed 53 combat missions in the Falklands War and dropped three 1,000lb bombs on Port Stanley airfield.

Plane fanatic Chris, of Brighouse and Denholme Road, has taken months to painstakingly rebuild the craft, which has no engine and can only be used for display.

The aircraft was one of several jump jets sold by the Ministry of Defence in 2006 after the model was taken out of service. Most went into the hands of private collectors.
