SIX cars were seized and three people arrested during a crime blitz in Calderdale.
West Yorkshire Police's Automatic Number Plate Recognition team were in the district for a day-long operation targeting criminals using cars.

One person was arrested on suspicion of stealing a car and two were held over drugs and money laundering
offences.

It was first time the team has worked in Calderdale since it was launched last month.

Detective Inspector Dean McIntyre, intelligence co-ordinator for the Calderdale division, said the operation was a success.

"This was the first time the team has been used in Calderdale but it will be used again on a regular basis, looking at different issues from burglary to driving without insurance."

He said the team would be working with neighbourhood policing teams across the district to target issues raised as local priorities.

West Yorkshire Police's ANPR system uses a network of cameras that scan the number plates of vehicles and run them through police and insurance databases.

The team use the system to check cars and if a vehicle that has been used to commit an offence is spotted, the police intercept it.

Great news. Every police car should be fitted with ANPR.

Just another example of motorists paying for Christmas partys. Nothing at all to do with crime fighting. I know from experience that the police abuse these powers to take peoples cars - charging £105 which incidently is more than most fines that are handed out by Courts for offences which have been PROVEN to have been commited; not by a 25 year old idiot on a power trip whos getting paid commission.
