A SKATE park has been closed after vandals damaged safety rails and ramps.
More than £1,000 of damage has been caused to Centre Vale skate and BMX park, Todmorden.

But a Todmorden town councillor said closing the park was a knee-jerk reaction.

The sides of ramps were removed and nuts and bolts were taken out of equipment, leaving it unsafe.

Now Calderdale Council playgrounds manager Chris Holroyd has removed all the ramps.

He said that until young people could respect the equipment and report those who are dismantling it, he would not re-install it.

But Coun Josef Rez said: "It is a bit premature. Talk about the wrong time to take it down. This is the time when teenagers will be oiling their wheels and getting ready for summertime. They will find that there is nothing there, which will be a big disappointment."

He said park wardens, along with a new team of street angels, who will begin patrolling the town late at night next month, and two new police community support officers should be able to deal with any issues of vandalism or anti-social behaviour.

New playground equipment has also been damaged. A large climbing frame, which is used as a shelter by teenagers, has been set on fire.

Town councillors had asked for notices to be installed so people could ring to report vandalism and also asked Calderdale Council to write to local schools.

But before this could happen, the skate park was shut.

It opened in September 2003. It took five weeks to build and cost £40,000, funded by Calderdale Council and Rampage, part of Todmorden Youth Committee.

Mr Holroyd said: "Unfortunately we have had to remove some of the equipment from Centre Vale Park for health and safety reasons.

"It has come to the council's attention that some of the skate ramps have been vandalised.

"We are now working to find a way forward to ensure the young people of Todmorden can benefit from this facility again in the near future."

Chris Holroyd is an idiot! Telling the kids who love and use the ramps that they can't have them back until they "respect the equipment and report those who are dismantling it" is more than a smack in the face. It's petulant.
I would probably suggest that the vandals aren't regular users but are cider fuelled numpties who think that the skaters and park riders are an easy target and this useless council gimp has merely played into their hands.
For Gods sake!

I agree, barcode. It doesn't make sense that the skaters would vandalise the ramps. Why should they be punished? A lot of vandalism problems aren't caused by kids, but by 20-somethings who have nothing to do with their lives but to break and destroy things that other people enjoy.

The Council Tax Payers are the losers every time.
Where are the Police, or any other security arrangements to protect our property?
Calderdale are supposed to employ park wardens!
We get more or less, daily spin about what the police are doing for us, how they have increased numbers.
Where is this invisible army?
When those paid to do a job actually get down to doing it, then we may see a lessening of all this costly vandalism?
Meanwhile it costs a fortune!

Has the council got a PR department? If so they aren't doing a very good job!

As children we all saw how far we could push things and none of us were angels, it part of the growing up process, but why is the need to destroy things becoming more prevalent? There appears to be no respect for property or other people. These moronic individuals seem to target anything outside there own insular little bubble. You can blame boredom, television and any other excuse, but I reckon we are not teaching and reinforcing respect at home or at school and also we live in a throw away culture where it is perceived that things can be replaced easily and cheaply. Firstly catch the vandals, and then make them and their parents repair or replace the vandalised items and publicise it. Almost like a family doing community service.

A knee jerk reaction to punish the people who actually use and respect the ramps by removing them leaves me dumbstruck. Has Mr. Oldroyd got a clue at all? Remove the ramps for health and safety so then the skaters then have to make their own ramps which are twice as dangerous.

The people who did this will simply move onto another target. Let's just pray it's not a human being.

I noticed some graffity on the council offices the other day. I think that council workers should be locked out until they respect council property and report those that have done it.

(Sorry, having a Chris Holroyd moment there).
