CALDERDALE rail passengers could have a direct link to London in a matter of months if a train operator gets its way.
Plans for the first direct connection between Halifax, Brighouse and the capital will be decided this summer.
Rail chiefs are optimistic passengers will be able to get to London in time to do this year's Christmas shopping.
The announcement is part of a Yorkshire-wide scramble among three train operators to link neglected towns and cities to the capital.
Plans for Calderdale are said to be in the most advanced stages, having already been submitted for consideration by train operator Grand Union.
"We have asked for six trains a day and are very optimistic and positive about the outcome", said Ian Yeowart, managing director of Grand Union.
"We have been waiting years for these plans and they're fully developed and costed.
"It is critical for Halifax, which has been very badly served in the past and national links can do wonders to help regenerate an area.
"We will hear a decision from the rail regulator during the summer and if our plans are accepted we will be up and running by December."
The plans, for one line between Bradford to London via Halifax and Brighouse and another between Huddersfield and London via Halifax and Brighouse, have been welcomed by local rail campaigners.
Stephen Waring, chairman of Halifax and District Action Rail Group, said: "This is extremely good news and the people of Calderdale should get behind it and make sure it happens.
"A lot of the problems on our railways have been highlighted and we are hopeful about solving them soon."
The news follow's the Courier's On Track campaign, which called for direct rail links to London and saw hundreds sign a petition.
