CALDERDALE rail passengers could have a direct link to London in a matter of months if a train operator gets its way.
Plans for the first direct connection between Halifax, Brighouse and the capital will be decided this summer.

Rail chiefs are optimistic passengers will be able to get to London in time to do this year's Christmas shopping.

The announcement is part of a Yorkshire-wide scramble among three train operators to link neglected towns and cities to the capital.

Plans for Calderdale are said to be in the most advanced stages, having already been submitted for consideration by train operator Grand Union.

"We have asked for six trains a day and are very optimistic and positive about the outcome", said Ian Yeowart, managing director of Grand Union.

"We have been waiting years for these plans and they're fully developed and costed.

"It is critical for Halifax, which has been very badly served in the past and national links can do wonders to help regenerate an area.

"We will hear a decision from the rail regulator during the summer and if our plans are accepted we will be up and running by December."

The plans, for one line between Bradford to London via Halifax and Brighouse and another between Huddersfield and London via Halifax and Brighouse, have been welcomed by local rail campaigners.

Stephen Waring, chairman of Halifax and District Action Rail Group, said: "This is extremely good news and the people of Calderdale should get behind it and make sure it happens.

"A lot of the problems on our railways have been highlighted and we are hopeful about solving them soon."

The news follow's the Courier's On Track campaign, which called for direct rail links to London and saw hundreds sign a petition.

Bring it on!! For us regular commuters this should reduce our travelling time, at long last. Will this news also bring forward the refurbishment of our derelict station in Halifax? Hmmm, that may require joined up planning, which doesn't seem to be a strong point in this neck of the woods. We can but hope.

Could have the link in matters of months.... no way... Even if they did do this.. it would be too slow.. Best bet.. drive to Wakefield West Gate and go from there!

I hope they get it up and running by, then, but in all seriousness my guess is May/June 2010 is the earliest they'll sort out the timetabling.

Pff! the Wakefield Westgate route is a joke! The last time I did that to get to Canterbury via London, the train was cancelled because nobody wanted to go there! This would be brilliant for people like me who want to get to London and back instead of trailing to Leeds or Wakefield first. I hope that they do something nice with the station though, a modern building would look out of place in Halifax, the old building is so grand, they should take that back from Eureka and have it there. I have to say though, I'm as pessimistic as the rest that this will be up and running anytime soon.

Yeah Luke Johnson, redoing the old station would be by FAR the best idea! Imagine visitors stepping off the train into some grand architectural gem of a building.

Knowing what usually happens though, the existing building which looks excellent will be ignored so we can spend millions extra on building something else.

Either way though, lets get it updated. Having a good rail station with good links can make a town feel more connected to the rest of the country and in turn make it feel more 'cosmopolitan' and less of a place that is in the middle of nowhere.

Reading station is a dive and it leaves a bad impression on you when you enter the town. A nice station makes all the difference for first time visitors.

If theres any editor or anyone with sufficient power reading this then I would like to know if they or the courier would be willing to run a campaign to encourage the revitalisation of the old station. Not redoing the horrible poky one, I mean really doing someting with the old one to make it viable and have it done properly! I'm willing to do whatever campaigning would be necessary if there might also be support.
