THE owners of an old Volkswagen camper van are urging others to be vigilant after a thief stole the windscreen.
Lee Elmore and Rebecca Holden, of Savile Park, Halifax, have enjoyed holidays all over the UK in their imported Californian van but their latest jaunt had to be put on hold when the window was stolen over-night.

Rebecca, 28, said: "Over the past few weeks we had noticed some minor damage around the windscreen but just thought it was kids messing about.

"Then the windscreen went. We think it was done by someone who knew exactly what they wanted and our van has been specifically targeted."

Rebecca's partner, Lee, has spent the past three years restoring the 1967 van.

He said: "It's just appalling that someone had done this. If it is someone who is restoring their van, that makes me more angry.

"It is a shock and it is upsetting to think someone has stolen from our pride and joy to do up their own."

Along with the windscreen the thief took with other camping equipment from inside the van.

Lee said: "The equipment was worth a lot of money and if we weren't insured, the windscreen would have cost us the best part of £100. The thing is, the parts for the van are rare and not easy to get hold of.

"We just want to alert other camper van owners to be even more vigilant at the moment."

The theft was reported to police who are investigating.

Anyone with information should ring police on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
