THE new owners of Somerfield in Elland take over on Saturday.
The store in South Lane will take on its new name Nisa Extra/Mills, under new owners The Mills Group, a Newcastle-based food retail chain, in partnership with products supplier Nisa.

To complete the branding changes the store will be closed from Saturday lunch time and reopen for its official launch on Tuesday morning.

Somerfield stores across the country were bought by The Co-operative but in areas where they already had their own shops, they were sold to independent retailers.

All 34 staff employed by Somerfield have kept their jobs with the new owners, including store manager Richard Lay.

"Mills have shared their plans with me and I think our customers will be delighted with the range, prices and deals that the Mills team have put together," said Mr Lay.

Tuesday's celebrations will include handing over two £250 donations, to Elland Juniors' Rugby Club and Macmillan Cancer Support.

There will also be discount vouchers and special giveaways.

Employee Barbara Crossley, who retires on the launch day, will cut the ribbon to officially open the store.

Nigel Mills, managing director of The Mills Group, said: "We are extremely confident that Nisa Extra/Mills will be a great community store offering great value."

The Mills Group has 25 convenience, tobacco and newsagent stores and 52 convenience stores around the north east, Cumbria, North Yorkshire, West and East Midlands and South Wales regions.

Best of luck to them, I`m glad the staff have kept their jobs.
As Somerfield are now part of Co-op I`m sorry to say that whereas before I would pop into Somerfield for a few bits, I won`t use the Co-op as the staff are surly, ignorant and more concerned with talking amongst themselves than dealing with customers.

Must agree with jigsaw - the customer service provided by the staff at this store was the reason why I used this store rather than the co-op who seem to have some customer care problems in the Elland branch! - I hope this new store will be able bring product ranges and brands that are may not be available in some of the large supermarkets which will attract many new customers as sadly today you can go into any number of large national supermarkets and be presented with the same brands! Best of luck!

Why would the Co-op choose to keep their existing store and let the somerfield one go. The somerfield store was much better located. The existing Co-op store is just plain depressing, although this might have something to do with the staff as mentioned above!

They're probably not very friendly because they live and work in the ghetto that is Elland! Bloody horrible place.

DaveHendrix quote - They're probably not very friendly because they live and work in the ghetto that is Elland! Bloody horrible place.

Then how can one shop provide welcoming customer service and the other does not. It is about people having appropriate skills and the ability of a manager to recognise these skills when taking people on - not the area where they live - in fact Elland is a bit of an old fashioned place where people still say hello to each other!

They should have shut the Coop, as said above it is awful and the staff shoyuld work as cabin crew for British Airways!!!!!!!!!!!
Best of luck to Somerfield, I hope the products match the quality of the staff. :-)

If you knew what the management style of the Co-Op is at area level and above, then you would understand why the staff are so bloody miserable. Dickensian is probably the best description.

Good news about the change as Somerfield I found didn't have and never had the offers on tv, shame they have kept the staff though as I foung then rude, short tempered and didn't know the store and when the staff are talking to one-another whilst serving and ignoring the customer they lost my custom and if the staff stay I won't be going to thenew shop.
