They are among 18 of West Yorkshire's most impressive buildings and property schemes picked to battle it out for major honours in the 2010 Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Pro Yorkshire Awards.

Shelf Library, which was constructed from straw bales by Amazonails, an alternative building materials' specialist, has been chosen for the sustainability category.

The building opened last year.

Fielden Wharf, Todmorden, which was transformed from a derelict site into a canal-side beauty spot, has been picked for the tourism and leisure section.

And in the same category is Old Cragg Hall Barn, Hebden Bridge, a five-star self-catering holiday home rebuilt from a stone barn.

The Calderdale buildings are now in with a chance of winning one of eight awards, handed to the region's most inspirational initiatives in the property and construction sectors.

Some of the regional winners will go through to the national RICS Awards.

Colin Harrop, the chairman of the RICS Yorkshire and Humberside judging panel, said: "We were delighted to see the entries pour in and once again the tremendous variety and high standard of projects has far exceeded our expectations, which is a true testament to the resilience and excellence of Yorkshire and Humberside's property and construction professionals."

The winners will be announced on May 14.
