HALIFAX'S historic Wainhouse Tower – shut to the public a year ago – will stay closed indefinitely.
Calderdale Council says safety problems at the 130-year-old landmark are worsening.
And current funding means renovations will not be considered until April at the earliest.
A regular inspection of the tower, pictured above, revealed problems with ornate masonry at its top.
Before its closure the Grade Two listed monument was open to visitors on public holidays.
People flocked to climb its 403 steps and take in spectacular views of Halifax and surrounding towns.
Halifax MP Linda Riordan said: "I appreciate the upkeep of structures like Wainhouse Tower can be costly.
"But buildings should be maintained and kept open, not just viewed as relics of a forgotten past."
John Hargreaves, of Halifax Antiquarian Society, said: "The tower is one of the most prominent landmarks in Halifax. It enables people to connect with history and gives amazing views."
