TRADERS in Mytholmroyd have taken on the car clampers they claim are ruining their businesses.
Grange Dene Medical Centre, Mytholmroyd, has been employing the notorious Carstoppers to patrol the surgery car park and clamp all drivers who are not visiting the medical complex.
But yesterday, fed up with what they call "extreme and unreasonable" behaviour, staff from nearby businesses picketed the entrance to the car park, warning motorists of the restrictions in place.
Representatives from Milly's Cafe, Beauty Bank, Whitesands Travel and Golden Fish made a sandwich board sign and many drivers turned back.
Ninhing Poon, who owns the Golden Fish Chinese restaurant on Burnley Road, said he was appalled by the speed with which Carstoppers were taking action.
He said: "They are clamping people within 10 seconds and £75 is a lot of money. They are probably taking more than all of the shops around here put together."
The move was prompted by the issuing of a fine to an elderly man who was collecting a prescription for a throat complaint.
Harry Balaam, a regular customer at Milly's Cafe, nipped into the restaurant to use the toilet before going to the chemist.
Although Carstoppers eventually agreed to remove the clamp for free, Mr Balaam said he was extremely disturbed by the event.
"It is so unjust. I didn't have a cheque book or credit card or anything with me so I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't let me off."
Police attended the incident but said no laws were being broken.
Judy Edwards, from Milly's Cafe, said the clamping had hit takings badly, with a number of customers reduced to tears.
John Mooney, who lives above the cafe, insists he did not receive any notification of the wheel-clamping.
He said: "It is disgusting. Their heavy-handed approach is unnecessary. I think most people would be happy with some kind of metering system."
Carstoppers declined to comment but previously told the Courier there is an appeal process for drivers who feel they have been clamped unfairly.
Hebden Bridge Group Practice, which manages Grange Dene Medical Centre, were unavailable for comment but have previously said all queries would be dealt with by Carstoppers.
