A PRIMARY school warned about its standards has made huge strides and received top marks for pupils' enjoyment of learning.
Education watchdog Ofsted gave Moorside Community Primary School at Ovenden, Halifax, a notice to improve in February 2007 because standards in English, maths and science were inadequate.

Now, after a determined effort by staff, the school has been judged "good" with some outstanding features.

Head teacher Jo Edwards, who is leaving the school after 19 years in Calderdale, said she was delighted with the efforts of students and staff in turning the school around.

"It's been a fantastic effort.

"We've all worked extremely hard and I am really proud of the way everyone has put in the effort to transform the school."

In the report, inspectors said: "The school's admirable work in improving the quality of teaching and learning means there are now clear signs that the previous legacy of underachievement is being successfully tackled."

During their visit they found "teachers have high expectations of pupils and manage behaviour well. Pupils respond with much enthusiasm; the majority are very keen to learn and love to celebrate their achievements regularly.

"The school does a great deal to support the pupils' progress in their personal development. Many pupils benefit greatly from the school's emphasis on the development of social and communication skills."

Inspectors found the school good in all areas of activity.

They were very impressed with a key strength of the curriculum, the "WOW Factory", where pupils learn about issues connected with conservation, modern foreign languages, environmental awareness and global citizenship.

Mrs Edwards said the findings are a tribute to staff, pupils, governors and parents.

"We are delighted to have received outstanding grades for the pupils' enjoyment of their education and for the work of the governing body," she said.

"We're all pleased with this report but I know the team will not be resting on their laurels.

As I leave Calderdale to take on the challenge of a 3-18 Learning Community in Nottinghamshire, I know I am leaving Moorside in a very strong position."
