SHOPPERS in Halifax said the town needed a wider choice of stores and more high street names.
George Wilson, 79, of Burnley Road, Halifax, said he would prefer more variety.

"I think people would like to see one of the larger stores like Debenhams here. Harvey's and Marks & Spencer are the only big shops. More variety would mean more competition and better prices."

Lynne Thornton, of Hebden Bridge, said: "Halifax would certainly benefit from having more variety. I also think the high street needs more covered areas."

Larissa Bowman, 13, travels from Bradford to shop in Halifax.

She said: "I'd love to see H&M because it's fashionable and cheap. I'd also like to see more unique stores.

Sarah Todd, 17, of Mixenden, Halifax, said: "I'd like to see a Primark in Halifax so I don't have to travel to Huddersfield."

Friend Courtenay Bray, 16, of Halifax, said she would like to see more shoe shops.

"I have a shoe fetish, so more stores like Schuh would be great."

Adam Williams, 17, of Boothtown, Halifax, would like more alternative clothing stores.

"The shops in Halifax are too ordinary. The only good store for me is The Friendly Dragon in the Piece Hall."

Liz Barker, 53, of Todmorden, usually shops in Manchester.

"To keep me in Halifax I'd like to see a department store like John Lewis.

"Individual stores like Harold Crabtree are worth coming to Halifax for though."

A long line of stocks for the full council, plus free rtten veg for the chucking of.
Hell, a child could answer this question, how come the Council can't?

i think we need more independent shops of smaller businesses such as the ones in the corn exchange, but we need more entertainment such as a cinema or even a laser quest! Don't really want to see the town be another victim of capitalism and just become like any other ordinary Leeds, Manchester, Huddersfield on a smaller scale.
In a few years everywhere will just be the same, with the same old high street shops, if it carries on. With smaller retailers been driven out, due to higher renting costs, which only the big boys can afford its bound to happen.

Are these the same kind of 'specialists' that were drafted in to do the road census?? What's the point in asking? It's just a goodwill gesture to say well we did ask!!!! We mention things time and time again and Halifax town centre never alters.......... I haven't been in for months due to the lack of atmosphere, shops and variety.

ANDY1: Loads of people shop at primark.

Both my daughters get clothes from primark for their holidays. Summer clothes don't get worn much in this country so primark prices are great if you only wear the items a couple of times.
As for the lass from Mixenden, at least she's not bothered about what label she wears. (wonder if you would have made that comment if she had lived somewhere else?)
There are too many snobs who will only wear designer goods.
PS: My kids don't live in Mixenden so it doesn't matter where you live to shop at primark.
I've heard one is opening soon in HALIFAX so that's great.

Well siad JAXX

I also shop at Primark, why pay the high prices of designer clothes, just for a label! Kids grow out of clothes so quick I would not be able to afford to reclothe them every time they have a growth spurt! Oh & by the way im not from Mixy either, not that it matters! Hope Primark does open in Halifax, Debenhams would be nice too.

I don't think there is much the council can do about who has the shops on the High street, it will be Primarks accountants who decide if they want to come to Halifax, if you read the B & Q story it is mentioned the old store will probably become a designer outlet, possibly Primark, but thats nowhere near the High street !
