THERE is little more than a week for candidates to register for the Calderdale Council elections.
One third of the seats in all 17 wards are due to be contested and the winners will serve until 2012.
There are a total of 51 seats on the council which has no single political party in overall control.
Conservative and Liberal Democrat politicians are each defending six seats in the election on May 1, Labour three seats and there is a single Independent seat in Warley ward up for grabs.
The last day for nomination papers to be submitted is April 4 and the full list of candidates is due to be confirmed on April 8.
The final opportunity for people to register to vote in the elections in April 16 which is also the last day for people to apply to vote by post.
Polling stations will be open on Thursday, May 1, from 7am until 10pm and the results will be announced next day.

Lets hope that we get someone who has been elected by the people for the people and not putting up for election for what he/she may get out of it.....that would be a novelty

Brian,
I echo you!
I know one Independent candidate who will stand his ground, but when the rest are the same befuddled disinterested bunch, what chance?
Why we cannot dismiss the total Council on each and every election defeats me, although there will be a devious reason.
Roll-on May 1st.

Richard Langford,
Somewhere, among all my ranting, you will see I have said the same thing. I think the main cause for concern is the rush into Postal Voting. So easy for Mail bags to be left accidentally lying about in dark cellars?
Heaven help us when they get On-Line voting sorted out they'll manipulate like the blazes.
