PLANNERS have knocked back plans for a wind turbine on the site of the new Brighouse bus station.
The West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive wanted to put the turbine next to Gooder Street to provide renewable energy for the bus station.

But Calderdale Council decided the proposal would be too close to the road and an eyesore.

A statement said it would tower above everything and spoil the look of the area.

Metro is now considering its options.

"As part of Metro's commitment to minimising the environmental impact, it included the wind turbine in the bus station's design to provide renewable energy. That would have helped power the bus station's lighting, electronic information displays and CCTV," said a spokesman.

"We are now investigating acceptable alternatives which would let us achieve this aim."

Is a bus station a suitable place for a wind turbine? Vote now in our poll on the right.

This is the sort of thing is what wind turbines should be used for - the small scale local generation of power - and is how they are being used in developing contries . The small scale individual generation of electricity is the future. I wonder which large scale for profit generation company has put pressure on the council not to allow this as the widspread use of such a scheme is a threat to the long term viability of the compaines such as npower, british gas and powergen

this is the PERFECT plan for a windmill. Every large property in every town should have one or more. Calderdale Council cannot see what's good for all our futures. It needs to get its blinkers off and realise what needs to be done. An eyesore!!!! What a joke, there's nothing less pleasing to the eye than a townscape

The 3(?) turbines at the new B&Q in Halifax look fine. I think it's a great idea for all new buildings to have some type of local electricity generation built in, if it's feasible. I hope the council uses some of the hot air it generates to heat the council building.
