Hundreds of meat lovers packed in to the Old Bridge Inn, Ripponden, for the Pork Pie Appreciation Society’s 21st Charity Pork Pie Competition.

Butchers and bakers from all over the country were vying to be crowned the 2013 pork pie champion.

The winning pie in the traditional class was Peter Mellor of Mellor’s Farm Shop, Milton, Tuxford, near Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The winner of the artisan class, introduced for the first time to allow people the chance to come up with different variations to the classic pork pie, was Broster’s Farm Shop, Lindley, Huddersfield.

Celebrity judge this was Halifax’s own Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft.

Hannah said: “It’s really nice to have been invited and I got to judge the final and taste the best pies.

“I’m from Yorkshire so obviously I have to be a fan of pork pies. They’re not part of my diet as an athlete, but it’s good to be breaking the rules!”
