THERE were Christmas celebrations for the Calderdale Ukrainian community this weekend.

They tucked into the traditional 12 course, vegetarian dinner and celebrated Christmas Eve according to the Julian calendar.

The Ukrainian Christmas festive period starts on January 6 and ends on January 19.

Each person tried the Kutya - a dish of boiled wheat and honey - which is said to bring prosperity to those who eat it.

There were then 11 other dishes including beetroot soup, fish and boiled dumplings.

The club’s Cultural Secretary Darka Pratt said: “It went really well, we had families sat round the tables and there were up to four generations sat round marking the occasion together. It’s nice to keep the traditions alive,” she said.

Celebrations will continue until the end of the Ukrainian Christmas which falls on January 19.
