Ali lands knockout blows

Cricket Towergate Halifax League NAZKAT Ali scored the first ever century in a Rodney Warhurst Cup final to spur Illingworth to a 125-run win over Blackley at Queensbury on Sunday.

Illingworth were in trouble at 83 for six in the Sunday Section's showpiece game until Ali cut loose, hitting 12 sixes and four fours.

A target of 239 for victory in the 45 overs per side contest was a tall order for Blackley and they folded from 74 for one to 113 all out.

The final, put back from July 22 due to bad weather, went ahead hitch free apart from an invasion of the temporary car park by a herd of cows.

Illingworth made a good start in their quest for a third win of the season against their rivals, Steven Cook (17) and Liam Kelly (32) moving the score rapidly to 42 before a double bowling change brought rewards for Blackley.

Robert Large, who finished with four for 36, and Steve McNamara put their team in charge but Ali changed all that.

Dropped before he had scored, Ali's explosive innings provided some real fireworks for the crowd.

Blackley made a similar start with the bat as Illingworth, former SNOBs player Andy Deighton (14) and Jamshaid Shahid (34) putting on 43 for the first wicket.

Another 31 runs were added before Illingworth played their second trump card. Kevin Doherty, playing in his third Sunday Section final, took six wickets for 18 runs in nine overs of off spin as Blackley's challenge petered out.

Simon Windle of Mount Automotive Solutions presented the trophy to Illingworth skipper Karl Gornall and Ali took the man of the match award. The umpires were John Senior and Derrick Redhead.
