A animal-loving couple got a birthday treat of a lifetime when they became zoo keepers for a day.

Peter Bond and Julia Holden worked with rare lemurs and Humboldt penguins when they joined staff at the Dudley Zoological Gardens (DZG) recently.

Peter said: “I’ve always been fascinated with wildlife and conservation so this was a wonderful birthday present from Julia.

“During the day we were talking to tigers, feeding penguins and cuddling tapirs so we’ve had a terrific time.

“I didn’t think we’d get so close to the animals and the keepers were very well informed.”

Their role for the day included helping staff with daily duties including feeding, cleaning and caring for the collection - many of which are endangered species.

Peter Suddock, DZG chief executive, said: “Peter and Julia had an amazing time.

“We introduced Keeper For a Day and Little Zoo Keepers for eight to 13-year-olds as an experience a few years ago and it has proved so successful that staff are kept busy with requests from all over the country.”
