A college student has cooked up enough of a storm to bag herself a place in a national cheffing competition.
Maltings College, Wheatley, student Ashleigh Hellowell, 15, competed against seven other aspiring young chefs in the North East regional final of Springboard’s FutureChef competition and impressed judges so much she won a place in the regional final.
Ashleigh, of Siddal, wowed the judges in the competition hosted at Halifax’s Dean Clough Cooking School with her signature pan fried cod fillet with white wine mussels served on a bed of mashed potatoes. Ashleigh appealed to the judges sweet side with her samphire and rhubarb cheesecake.
Springboard judges say the finalists had to showcase fantastic flavours as well as demonstrating effective time management and budgeting skills.
Ashleigh, along with other hopefuls, have already succeeded in two previous rounds to qualify for the final.
The judges said Ashleigh impressed them with her winning menu which was served with confidence and professionalism.
Head judge Brian Clark, said: “Ashleigh wowed us with her complete focus, highly organised and calm approach to working in such a pressured environment and at the same time, she displayed a real understanding of the techniques needed to produce great food.
“I’ve worked with professsionals who would have been delighted to have produced the results Ashleigh did - she really stood out.”
Ashleigh said: “I’m so surprised to have won and I’m really excited for the national final.”
