Ashton United 1 FC Halifax Town 0: Striker featured in latest clash

STRIKER Ryan Sugden returned to Halifax colours for the second half of Saturday's friendly at Ashton United.

And while he didn't get on the scoresheet, his presence gave Jim Vince's side a boost despite suffering a narrow defeat.

While Sugden was a familiar face to the travelling supporters, they were also treated to the sight of another new signing in Justin Walker, who has joined on a one-year deal from Ilkeston Town where he played under Halifax assistant boss Nigel Jemson.

Sugden was a popular figure in Chris Wilder's side and was a member of the team which narrowly lost in the play-off final at Leicester.

He moved on to Farsley Celtic and was latterly at Bradford Park Avenue before making his surprise appearance at Hurst Cross.

Walker is a 32-year-old former Nottingham Forest trainee who spent time at Scunthorpe United where he made 120 league appearances.

The journeyman midfielder has also taken in spells at Lincoln, Exeter, Cambridge United, York and Chester.

Walker showed his considerable experience on Saturday and produced an eye-catching display as Halifax worked hard to get themselves back into the contest.

They fell behind early on when a cross to the far post was headed in by Ian Howard.

Ben Jones looked lively for the visitors and he went close on two occasions and even had a goal ruled out.

Trialist Jon Smith was another player to catch the eye and he forced a good save from the Ashton keeper before having a good shout for a penalty turned down.

Vince had plenty to feel positive about and now takes his side to Unibond Premier Division side Guiseley for their next test on Thursday.
