Athletics: Fleet looking good in heat

UNSEASONABLY hot conditions greeted Calder Valley and Stainland Lions runners who took part in the classic Lantern Pike fell race in the Peak District on Saturday.

Held as part of the traditional Hayfield show near Glossop, the race is set in superb scenery starting and finishing in the showground.

A total of 270 runners tackled the five mile course which climbs 1,050 up to Lantern Pike and boasts the longest unbeaten best time record of any fell race at 29 minutes, 12 seconds set in 1977.

And the record survived, victor Steve Vernon of Stockport Harriers finishing in 30.30.

First back for Calder Valley was Andy Fleet in an excellent 25th place in 38:14, while Sally Newman was third lady overall and first F45 in 40:36, with Steve Garner finishing in 49:14.

First home for Stainland was John Bassinder in 43.50, with Graham Dyson finishing in 45.29, Colin Hughes 46.58, Jon Pridgeon 47.44, Karl Martin 50.23, Linda Murgatroyd 51.27 and Tony McManus 52.33.

THE 15 mile Good Shepherd race from Mytholmroyd saw Calder Valley's Bill Johnson finish 12th in a time of two hours, 18 minutes and 49 seconds while Naomi Sharratt was first lady home and 22nd overall in 2.26.40.

Team mate Jackie Scarf finished in 2.41.55 and 12 other club members completed the course in times ranging from 2.23 to 3.33 in a race won by Todmorden-based James Logue in 2.02.45.

KARL Martin led a trio of Stainland runners in Sunday's seven and a quarter mile Kirkstall Valley trail race near Leeds.

Conditions were good for the woodland event and Martin finished in 56 minutes 37 seconds, with Sue Gledhill clocking 58.36 and Mark Preston 59.06.
