Athletics: Gray back in style
BORROWDALE in the Lake District was the spectacular setting for the penultimate British Championship fell race on Saturday and a host of local runners tackled what is one of the toughest races on the calendar.
The 17 mile course includes 6,500ft of climbing, with some of the route on the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, and tough climbs on Great Gable and Dale Head in the second half of the race.
Torrential overnight rain made the course wet and slippery underfoot and though the rain held off for the duration of the race, mist descended on Great Gable causing navigation problems for a large number of the field of close to 500.
Race winner was Simon Booth from the local Borrowdale club in a time of 2.49.50, while among the Calder Valley contingent were notable performances from Karl Gray, back after a short injury lay-off, who finish a creditable 11th in 3.06.06, Adam Breaks, 25th in 3.17.26 and Shaun Godsman who finished 29th in 3.22.28.
The consistent Helen Fines was sixth lady and 99th overall in 3.43.21.
Stainland Lions duo Helen Lambert and Linda Murgatroyd also took part, Lambert putting in an excellent performance to complete in four hours, 48 minutes with Murgatroyd unfortunately among those who lost their way on Great Gable and were sadly timed out.
The last race in the series will be held at Dufton in the former county of Westmorland at the end of August, where Calder Valley ladies team ae hopeful of clinching first place in the series.

SIX Stainland Lions joined more than 300 runners in the 10K Idle Trail race on Sunday with John Kershaw first home for the club in 48 minutes, 15 seconds.
Other Lions finishers: Aileen Baldwin 51.05 and first place in F55 category, John Ingles 51.14, Steve Hallam 54.42, Caroline English 57.46 and Corinne Ruckstuhl 65.42.
